What’s on Your Design Wall?

March 13, 2009 · 4 Comments

This is the question I intend to pose to the Quilt Art List! And I will go first. This is what is up right now:

And this:

And just for fun, this is what is on my main work table:

And this is my latest knitting project, another pair of socks:

blog-0071

These are size 4 needles. The pink is much brighter than this picture shows. I just love varigated yarn! This is Sinfonia, a 100% cotton yarn that I bought at Hobby Lobby. I have never worked with this before but so far so good. I am not  the greatest knitter in the world but I love making socks. The only thing I DON’T like is not really knowing if they  will fit until I have put  a bazillion hours into them. Hopefully I will have the first one of the pair done this weekend.

Until later….what are you working on?

New Work in Progress

March 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Thanks for all the congrats on getting in to Sacred Threads! I am amazed even yet.

I did get back into the studio today but I am letting the painted quilt sit for a while. I moved back into more comfortable area and started working on another ladder quilt. Here is where I am so far:

blog-0031

This measures about 16″ x 20″ at this point and it is tentatively called “Corporate Ladder”. The greens are a bit more intense than this picture shows.

The other day I started this one:

blog-002-3

Not sure at all where this is going. I got stuck and that is why I started the one above. Obviously, it is much farther along. Both of these started with strips leftover from other things. I may work on them more later today and maybe not. I am feeling very antsy for some reason and can’t seem to stay focused for very long on anything!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Facing Tutorial

February 10, 2009 · 3 Comments

I finished quilting the small ladder piece and decided since I was going to face it, that I might take some pics along the way and try my hand at creating a tutorial to show how I do it. I realize there are many ways to do this but this is what works for me. Beware, this post is long and has lots of pics!

First I trim the quilted piece to size.

tutorial-001

Next I cut my facing strips. I cut these 2″ wide. Length doesn’t matter at this point as long as they are longer than each side of your quilt. I fold one long edge of each strip under aout 1/4″ like this:

tutorial-003

Then I apply a length of 1/4″ fusible tape to each side. This is made by Dritz and is used to make fusible bindings etc. I have also used the wider stuf made for hemming pants the lazy way. This is what this looks like:

tutorial-0061

I apply this to the folded edge of the facing strips like this:

tutorial-004

Next I measure the top and bottom of my quilt and cut the top and bottom facing pieces slightly shorter. I find this helps to get a nicer edge when it is all done as the shorter facings can take up some of the fullness and insure that the facing stays to the back and doesn’t wshow from the front.  After this, I lay the top and bottom strips onto the front of the quilt, fusible side up like this:

tutorial-009

See how I left the paper backing on the fusible strips? They won’t be removed until much later. Now the fun starts. I am going to peel back a bit of the paper at one corner Like this:

tutorial-0101

I then lay one of the side facings down over the exposed fusible like this:

tutorial-011

Then I lay the paper back down and press to fuse the corner pieces together.  It will look like this:

tutorial-012

You can trim the extra seam allowance at this point if you want to. After I have done all four corners in this manner, the facing is now fused at the corners into one piece. I place a pin in the top of the quilt and the top facing piece so I don’t get things switched around.

tutorial-020

Then I take the facing to the sewing machine, fold back the fused seams in the corners and sew on the fold line. The pics of this step didn’t turn out well so that is why you don’t see it! After that, I pin the facing back onto the front of the quilt.  and sew around the edge with a 1/4″ seam and a walking foot on my machine. I trim the corners and it looks like this:

tutorial-024

Now it is time to turn the facing to the back. It will look pretty wonky at this point but don’t panic, it will get better:

tutorial-025

I hope you didnt remove all the paper yet! It is time to roll the edges with your fingers and give a good hard press to the edges. I start in the center of each side and then go back and do the corners. After you have pressed it well and you are happy with it, NOW you can remove the paper:

tutorial-026

Now carefully press to fuse the facing to the quilt back. This is the final press, take it slow! Turn it over and admire your lovely work!

tutorial-0281

You can hand stitch the folded edges of the facing to the quilt back while watching DEEE-TROIT BASKETBALLL!!!

The neat thing about this method, is that your quilt doesn’t have to be square for it to work well. I am finding that I like art quilts with wonky edges and weird angles. Hope this helps.

Sorry my pics are not great. I do know to work on that next time! Let me know if you give this method a try or if you have any suggestions for me for future tutorials.

ADDENDUM:

Lots of people have asked why I handstitch after fusing the facing. I am, generally speaking, not a fuser, so for me, it feels finished when I have done the hand sewing. It is something I like to do. I think of the fusing as basting. This is entirely up to you. If you feel it will hold well enough without stitiching, go for it!

Thankful

February 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

There has been a discussion lately on the QA list about the high price of taking classes etc. Someone on the list talked about volunteering to behostess at workshops she couldn’t afford to attend just so she could soak up the info. Great idea! It made me think back to the early days of quilting for me and reminded me how much I have to be thankful for.

I was always a SAHM  and thankful tha  DH had a good enough job that I could do that. My DH took me to my first quilt show and he taught me to sew using a castoff sewing machine from my SIL. He oohed and aahed over every ugly thing I made.

He tried to make it home early enough one Wednesday a month that I could go to the local guild meeting. With 4 small kids at home, I looked forward to that one night like it was Christmas. I was often one of the last to leave because if I got home before all the kids were in bed, I felt cheated :) . I did pretty much all traditional stuff back then but I got a great education by joining guild activities. I volunteered to be the librarian one year so I had access to all the books between meetings! I was also involved in AOL Quilters Online way back when because I could do this from home. I always dreamed that when the kids grew up and I could afford it, I would take classes or workshops.

To date, I have taken one 2 hour class on machine quilting.

I would love to someday take a class but I have learned that I don’t need to. If I want to do something, I figure out how one way or another. When I did finally have the money to take a class, I usually found I would rather spend the $ on supplies or books. I guess what I am really trying to say is that not being able to take a class can be a good thing. It has forced me to find out things on my own and to find my own way of doing things. I am NOT knocking classes or those who take them. I do dream of one day being able to go to the Crow Barn and take a class from Nancy herself. But looking back, not having cash can make the journey a bit more interesting. It has for me.

Remember these bits?

blog-012

Sorry for the bad picture. Now they have become this:

blog-001-2

I am going to try to at least start the quilting on this today. I am not in love with it but I am going to push through and see if I can break through m creative doldrums. Until next time…..be thankful!

Am I Done Yet?

February 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I had a quiet hour today and headed to the sewing room. I have had these pieces on  my design wall for ages and decided even if it was not gloriously wonderful, it was time to sew this thing together and move on. I feel like I have been in a bit of a creative slump lately and this is my effort to press though I guess.
blog-0011

So now I am trying to decide if it is done.  It loosely fits with my ladder series.  It is about 20″ by 30″ or so and no, it is not straight and square at this point. Haven’t decided if it will be or not. The colors are a bit washed out in this pic. I wanted this finished today…..ain’t gonna happen. I think it is time for another cup of joe……

Ribbons!

February 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I recently entered 5 of my quilts into the Northeast Arts Council Show held in Standish, Michigan every January.  I have entered this show on and off for the last 7 or 8 years. It is not huge but it is well done. The show is held in an old church that is now used as the Arts Council Center. Most of the quilts are pretty traditional. I love traditional quilts and usually enter quilts appropriate to the show. This year I decided to enter a few of my art quilts. I wasn’t sure how well they would be received but I ended up taking home 5 ribbons! Here is a picture of three of myquilts hanging together. You can see the Pomegranate is very traditional, green and red applique complete with trapunto, but the other two are decidedly more contemporary.

The miniatures were displayed on glass shelves in a glass display case so this pic is not great:

And this one was just about to be taken down at the end of the show so that explains the stuff pinned on top:

forsale-003

After picking up the quilts, my dear daughter and I headed over to the local A&W for a float. Isn’t she lovely?

And here is a picture of the dreary Michigan winter that I am quite tired of by now:

forsale-023

It just looks cold, doesn’t it?  I haven’t blogged anything in a while, life has intervened. So I guess this long post with pics is my attempt to make up for neglecting the blog.  It is also cover for the fact that I haven’t gotten much sewing done lately.

I am making some progress at cleaning out the sewing room still. It is very hard for me to work in chaos. I am working very hard at simplifying my life this year and one of my goals is to make a serious dent in all the stuff I have accumulated art/sewing wise. I have a certain amount of cleaning out I want to do every week and for the most part, I have kept this goal pretty well. Although I better get to work now or I will miss it for this week! Until next time…

Decision Time

January 10, 2009 · 8 Comments

A few days I wrote about a piece I was working on. I had pieced strips that I intended to recut for another ladder quilt but I liked the stripped pieces so much that I didn’t know if I should continue with the original plan or not! After several days of these bits up on the design board, I decided to put this together without recutting. I rearranged a bit and decided to set in a corner to make it all fit. I think it also made it more interesting. Here is the top:

ygbstrips2

I did a bit of machine quilting practice and felt that I had to make something usable out of my practice piece so I made this little bag today. It is about 9 inches long and maybe 4 inches wide. I don’t know what I will do with it though.

bag13

I also machine quilted a top that I posted a few days ago. I hate the way it turned out! What was I thinking??? I used a light to dark gray varigated thread. I did a terrible job here and I do not like the way I decided to quilt this. I am NOT picking this all out. Trying to figure out what I could do to redeem this ugly thing!

Any ideas?

Back to cleaning out the sewing room and listing some more vintage items on eBay. See my link on the side if you are interested. Have a great weekend everyone!

Thanks and another WIP

January 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I wanted to say thanks to everyone who sent e-mails and left comments about my last post. I haven’t come to any hard and fast conclusions but I think Myrna’s comment said it best for me. She said, “The reason that we like the work of certain artist is because their work contains elements of our style. It makes sense. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be drawn to them. ” I think I agree with this.

I may get back to that piece tomorrow but in the mean time, I was reminded of this piece that I started quite a while ago.

sept08

This is turned 90 degrees from what I had originally planned. Just today I thought, what if….. so I turned it and think I like it better this way. I may finish it now. I was ready to throw it away before. Have to think about how to quilt it.

I did a bit of sketching tonight. More ladder ideas. I need to sew tomorrow. I am going to start substitute teaching soon and that will seriously cut into my available sewing time so I need to take advantage of the time I have now.

Have a great day!

Hmmmm…..now what?

January 6, 2009 · 7 Comments

This picture shows some bits I worked on last weekend. These pieces were freely cut with my rotary cutter and pieced back together. I had intended to cut them again and work this into a new ladder piece. But, I like them like this! I am very pleased with the randomness and slight curves in the strips. Cutting without measuring or using a straight edge is still tough for me and I think partly why I like this is that it is proves to myself that I can do this. I used the chocolate brown with some leftover pieces from the strips sets and think it works well with the yellow and green.

ygbstrips

So now what to do? Do I sew this together or get back to cutting?

Another thing bothers me here: this reminds me of some pieces by other quilters I admire. I am not trying to copy them, but I do want to explore working with this kind of cutting and piecing. Am I infringing when I explore similar ways of working? I have read about people taking Nancy Crow’s workshops and she has people make certain strip sets and then recut and combine them in other ways. This is a method she uses and teaches. I love her work. (Some day, I would LOVE to take one of her classes.) If I do this, am I copying her way of working or is it really my art? How can I get beyond this to something entirely new of my own creation if I don’t work through making pieces with the very basics of making strip sets because I am afraid my work will look like someone elses?

I thought I was happily sewing last weekend  but what I really did was open a can of worms in my own mind. Maybe that will be the title of this piece if I ever decide where to go from here.

Comments and thoughts are welcome.

Finally!

December 15, 2008 · 4 Comments

I stole away a bit of time to sew. I wasn’t feeling particularly creative but I had some of these bits on the design wall so I just started sewing and here is the result:

blog-004-2

Another ladder quilt. Right now this measures about 14″ x 16″ and yes, it is crooked on  the bottom. I love the chocolate and turquoise together. I don’t think this will get any bigger. I think I need something to mindlessly quilt at this point and this might be that thing. Feel free to leave comments/critiques!
